Hello all, well am new to this forum and the piranha thing. Well i bought a 4ft tank, as i wanted to start an aquarium, but the person i got the tank of had 2 piranhas in it and so i had to take them, i dont really have a clue to be honest on how to keep them. Ive read up stuff on this site on them, to try find out more information on them, as i dont just want to let them die for no reason, so i will try and keep them. Is it a good idea for me to try and keep them, seeing i dont know much about them and if so can people give me some tips on them and wot i should put in my tank for them and so on.

Thanks Brendan

hey brendan...they are pretty easy to care for...get market shrimp..uncooked...they love that. market fish.. silversides...which are fish that come frozen. you can get them at a petstore or the market.

Thanks bumpylemon. Ill try get some better pics of it soon. Can i put a light in the tank? and if so, which lights are better? and tell me this, ive read on here when they get speckles on them, it means they might be having babies is that true? and they seems to always stay together, is that wot they all do i guess?

Sorry if any my questions sound abit stuiped, just trying to lrean more about these :P

Thanks Brendan

speckles just mean they are getting older...yours are prob like 6 or 7 months old....here are mine that are like 4-5 months old. yes you can put a standard light on it..they do like it darker tho. you can throw some floating plants to dim it

hey man welcome to the forum. I have 9 Red Bellies that are about the same size as yours. They are amazing fish and you will love them but they are schooling fish and your tank is at least a 55 and I honestley think you could get 1 or 2 more if it is a 55 and if its bigger then that even more. Enjoy your piranhas and as said above get some market shrimp. They love that.

hi mate good luck with you first piranha
have a few tips for you
if you want a light and you want to dim it wrap some black insulating tape round to bulb in a candy cane style if that makes sence
also try to get another 2 piranha as this may stop any fighting between the 2 as when they get older they may start to fight
hope this helps

Nice fish!!! we have 3 red bellies, they really are pretty easy fish to take care of....we've tried lots of different food over the years and right now they LOVE beef heart, you can buy it for cheap at the market and just cut it up into bite size pieces, they really go for it, just make sure to take any excess out :)
raw meat/food is the way to go! we'll get some large feeder goldfish for when we have friends over though they always seem to be watching us instead of the goldfish :)
they are a hearty fish but you do need proper lighting and heat, both inexpensive and usually a one time purchase, be careful of where in the tank you postition them (if its a glass heater) ours LOVE to smash into and bite everything thats in the tank :) if you're adding more piranhas we tried to make sure they were similar in size as to not invite any fighting.
good luck!!!!
