I just got into the hobby. I have a 55 gallon with two green terrors, a jack dempsey and an electric blue dempsey. they are about 2 inches a piece except the jack dempsey is about 2.5 and he is beating up on everything. i seperated him from the others. how long should i wait to put him back in?

Cichlids typically do not appreciate "friends" of their own species, or of species that look quite similar to themselves...
With this in mind it's not surprising that the larger Dempsey is picking on the others...
With enough decorations and hiding places I would expect these 4 fish to be able to get along in a 55 gal at 2~2.5"... but sometimes we simply get an unusually aggressive fish. When we do, there's really not much we can do to stop it. So the choices are to stock the tank to cater to the aggressor, or take him back in exchange for (hopefully) a more peaceful fish.
