Hello MFK's I have just joined this site the other day, so I decided to say hello. I have a 47 gallon african tank and a 29 gallon goldfish tank(daughters) and I found a 55 gallon by my dumpster at my office so I decided to set up a central american tank. I have in it an oscar, JD and a GT. I do understand these guys will get big. lol. There are also 8 silver dollars that I got from one fish guy for only a buck a piece. Anyways I have a sandy bottom with a piece of driftwood and 2 more soaking I just found them today. I also have some river rock for decoration. I am wanting to put some plants in there I know the O will dig them up so I was thinking about java fern or some anubias. What do you think?

welcome to the forum!

Oscars hate plants unfortunately, your best bet will be with some floating plants, Oscars uproot plants constantly. Some anubias works as it tastes bitter, but they usually get to it eventually. Some Oscars work fine with plants, but it sounds like your Oscar isn't one of those. Java fern is hardy, but again, the Oscar will get to it eventually.

hey hey hey
and i agree anubias and java ferns are ur best bet,
anything big and beefy!! if ur lfs is anything like mine they always have a cpl tanks dedicated to really big plants...shop around...

Agree that the oscar will need at least a 75g all to itself. The GT will eventually become dominance in the 55gallon and try to kill the other fish. Except for the dilter SD.

Thanks for the advice, i know that they will out grow them but right now Im currently looking into a 120 gallon. I found this one by a dumpster, filled it up and got some babies, they are only an inch or two.
