Hello everyone. New to the boards here, but certainly not new to cichlids/aquariums. A few days ago, I just bought a 2" Jaguar cichlid. He's very beautiful with his colorings. He has this amazing golden color with the trademark markings. His fins are very pointed rather than round. So im guessing hes a male. Hes VERY territorial with the Danios I have in there with him. But i have him in a 20g Long by himself now with driftwood and rocks to hide, and he absolutely loves it. I fully plan on moving him as this is just a grow tank until I get his 4ft tank (75 or so) next month. I think hell be ok for just a few more weeks. But the danios had to be removed and transfered to my other tank (wifes tank) for the sake of them lol. But I was wondering, ive been feeding him what the guy has been feeding him and the other cichlids he had. Since hes small hes been feeding him the tetra granules with color enhancer. He really enjoys them but was wondering if its a good food and would it be ok to continue feeding him it until he out grows the food and has to be put on a bigger pellet? What would you recommend for a Jag for growth and color? I don't plan on putting any other fish in with him for as long as i keep him so hell be kickin it solo.

Hello and welcome to MFK!

You'll get much better responses to your question in the Cichlid forum...but, I'll quickly say here that a variety of foods seems to work best. Of course, avoid live feeders and too much meaty foods.

Again, welcome!

i also have a new jag sorta but hes in 110g i feed him mostly hakari pellets and he ended up being super kool with a like electric blue coloring on the top part of his top fin.i feed him like isaid hakari pelets since he finally eating them but also istarted him with little tiny guppies every other week or so.now feed him earth worms pellets and river feeders.

how did u tell if he was male or female?o yea i forgot krill and frozen blood worms

Here's a juvenile Cuban. If you do a search with my name "Aquamojo" and managuense you will find a ton of photos of managuense. There's a major difference between the two. Color and pattern are very different.

Welcome to MFK.

As far as diet, it all comes down to personal preference. Some members swear by Hikari, some swear by New Life Spectrum. I myself prefer NLS as it seems to have better ingredients and more nutritional value. The fish of mine that have ate it were all healthy and great looking fish.

I'd also suggest a bigger tank than a 75, male Jags especially can definitely reach the 16" range and I feel that an 18" wide tank for a male Jag is kind of cramped. Of course, this is just my opinion. But I'm sure most will tell you the bigger the tank you can get, the better. Especially with fish that have potential to get that large.
