This is my first post, but it does not look the right place to put it.

I have just bought a Canon 40D as a upgrade from a 300D, and wish to take photos of my fish with flash. I have a 550EX and 430EX flash units, Canon slave unit, Manfroto flash bracket so I can hold both flashed on each side, 17-85 IS and 105mm Sigma Macro lenses, polarizing filter, corded remote unit. Can any body give any guidance?

Any help much appreciated.

You have a nice setup to get going with right now.

Put the flashes on top of the tank pointing down at about 1/4 to 1/2 power. Use your ST-E2 to fire them.

With the smaller fish the Sigma will work great. With bigger fish the 17-85 will work fine. You won't need any filters.

I'd go 1/200ss, start f/9 and go up from their checking your histrogram as you go. ISO at 100 or 200.

I'm probable forgetting something.

You should get some great pictures with the 40D as soon as you get used to it.

Welcome to APF, Andrew. Your equipment should let you make a good start in aquarium photography. Please show us some of your early results and we will be able to help you to sort out any problems that arise.
