It has been six months and I'm finally getting around to setting up my overflow instead of just using the canister filter. The tank had plumbing that came with it but the threading on the bulkheads got damaged, so I have to start over. Problem is, I've got no idea what parts to buy.

I know to buy from here:

but I have no idea what to measure and what Slip/FIPT mean. Hell, I don't even know what a flange is or what side the gasket goes on. Yes, feel free to make fun of me.

The joints on the PVC return (which are wider than the straight PVC piping) say 1/2" so I assume I'm safe in saying that the PVC is 1/2. But what are they referring to both size and diameter? Size of the hole in the middle and overall diameter of the black part? I guess that makes sense, so then my question just becomes what about slip vs FIPT and which side do I put the gasket on?

I guess the same question applies to measuring the hose barbs, as the smallest they sell are 5/8" and they're also threaded. Are the insides of the bulkheads also threaded?

Here's a pic of the ones I'm replacing, if it matters. Unfortunately it's all cemented together so I need new barbs and PVC as well. But that part will be easy. Have to buy more PVC anyway to make my standpipe. Just a bit confused on the bulkhead part.

Thanks...
