I've done things kinda bass akwards by starting with a 29 gallon salt tank, going to a 130 gall reef tank, and only now want to try freshwater! :screwy: I'm serious about my pets being kept comfy so before I even buy the tank I want to have my plan in place and hope y'all can help me out.
The only criteria so far is it has to have a Black Ghost Knife. This is what I've found so far, please let me know if you disagree with any of it:
black ghost knife Apteronotus albifrons
up to 20"
ph 6-8
hardness soft to med
temp 73-82
fast water stream with sandy bottom
low light
hiding places
nocturnal
peaceful with similar sized tankmates but aggressive eaters
carnivore
min 50 gallons
I plan to do a planted tank with plants, woods, etc native to the areas knifes are found in. The only trouble I'm really having is with compatible tankmates. I've seen them put with everything from cardinal tetras to cichlids! I've also been told they absolutely can't go with smaller fish (like those tetras!) because they'll definitely eat them, can't go with most cichlids because they'll get eaten up...argghhh :WHOA: Did the people with cardinal tetras get away with such small fish in with a GBK with luck in the personality of the GBK/not feeding any feeder fish/enough tank room and hiding spots for the tetras? Could anyone just give me a list of fish that you feel would be compatible for me to choose from?
Thanks!!!

I've really only seen them w/ cichlids. A friend of mine once had them with jack dempseys..course you'll prolly need a bigger tank;)
What about mid-size SA cichlids, like firemouths, sevrums, etc?

I've been afraid to mix jack demseys with much of anything since I tried putting different fish in with them at the LFS I worked for and the demseys beat the mess out of all of them!! It was really scary coming into work to see the lil turds had ripped up oscars almost three times their size one day! :WHOA: Maybe the supplier just bred demseys with some really bad attitudes!!
I know sevrums are fairly peaceful and get largish.
Don't tinfoil barbs get along better with a school? I know it's better to keep tiger barbs in groups.
