I've never had my own fishing pole but I'd like to pick a cheap one up that isn't a complete piece of junk. I only plan on catching small fish (probably 15lbs tops). Most likely stick with freshwater ponds, creeks, rivers, etc. Is there a specific length I should be looking for? What are good rod/reels to look for and what are ones to stay away from? Should I hunt on craigslist or just go pick up a new one at Bass pro shop. I'm leaning towards craigslist as I could probably score some tackle and line for free in the deal as well. Having the pole already set up is a plus...:)

Start with an open faced spinning reel. Shoot for a rod 6-7 ft. On the butt end just above the reel mount, look for the rating of the rod. You'll want a medium duty or medium-light. A single piece rod is better than a two piece, but either is ok for a first rod.

Bait caster reels are the ones that you often see the pros use on TV. They are the wrong reel for a first pole. They will turn you off to fishing before you even get a fair start.

You can't really go wrong at Bass Pro. They don't have the junk that you find at Walmart. A fifty dollar pole from Walmart will be in the trash in a year or two, but a fifty dollar pole from Bass Pro will serve you well for years to come.

Try a shakespeare Ugly Stick. Great for a beginner ;]

& CHOMPERS pretty much basically told you everything youll need.
