I grabbed 3 albino bristlenose fry via craigslist last night. Holy Cow! they were a lot smaller than I thought. They said 2.5 weeks old...

I've got them in a 1 gallon container with a small heater keeping it around 76 degrees (that's the temp they are used to)

I've crushed up part of an algae tablet for food.

Questions:

1) do they need air, or will frequent partial water changes be enough (daily?)

2) should I be feeding them something else?

3) anything else I should do to improve their chances of survival?

They are bopping around and sucking on the sides, to appear to be happy.

did you ask the breeder what to do?
if any one knows it would be that guy

im a BN ABN breeder.. if they are only 2.5 weeks old, the guy shouldn't have been selling them.. they are probably only 0.7 inches and are much too small to be kept out of a breeder..

but anyway... keep the tank at around 76-78 and feed them algae wafers.. you dont need to break them up, as they will rasp on it themselves.. if you want you can also feed fresh veggies.. my fav is zuchinni and mushrooms..

if i were you i would go out and invest in a plastic breeder and keep them in a tank with actual filtration. this is what i use..

make sure there are no fish in the tank that can peck at the babies from the slits in the breeder.. otherwise you might lose them..
keep them in the breeder until they get a little larger.. a little over an inch long give or take a bit.. depending on the types of fish your gonna keep them with..

Thanks, I'll grab a plastic breeder tonight and set-up my 10-gallon to put the breeder in. I was afraid of putting them directly into the 10-gallon and have them get sucked into the filter or something!

oh.. i meant like in an existing tank.. lol :D these guys are sensitive and wont we well through a cycle..

it takes probably close to a month - month and a half to grow them to 1 inch from eggs..

man at 2.5 weeks my babies would die instantly if i took them out for a few seconds. You should keep them at around 78-80 degree and do water change weekly until that they are 1 month old. Make sure you don't over feed them in that 1 gallon or else they will be goners.
