hey i checked ammonia levels other day and it read at .3 ppm so i did a 10-20% water change and tested levels again... NOW IT READ AT 1 PPM!! I'm screwed..
I have had the same type of problem (My Ammonia hasn't gotten that high yet), but I think that part of it is that the majority of my snails have been dying off because they have tipped over and not been able to right themselves. I know that with my FW snails, if one dies, the smell is HORRIBLE and I immediately do a water change, but I don't know if that's the same in SW.
55 gallon.. 5 2" parrot fish one small snowflake one candycane shrimp and hermit ... i think i know why there is a spike - i didn't let the bio media rebuild after the 2 months of running fallow do to ick infestation - or my cowlry shell died and is polluting tank - i havent seen him for a couple days ...
Add Prime + Stability. Prime would temporary detoxify ammonia while Stability would aid in buildup of benifical bacteria. And is your test kit for ammonium+ammonia or just ammonia? If it was the formal I won't worry too much and just dose x5 Prime. If you still have problems with ammonia after dosing, clearly your filtration is inadequate.
it's the APi ammonia test kit... i'm going to test when i get home from work... and gonna look for those products too(definitely the stability)....i have about 50 lbs of LR in tank, skimmer, and bioball/ ceramic ring filter... you think its mechanical? i have an awesome cleanup crew so i doubt it's over feeding... maybe too much poop? Thanks guys...
dangit... i should of known.... ok so basically do water changes and add those supplements... k got it.. thanks a bunch folks.. probably a combination of a lot of stuff..
