Help please. I have two bamboo sharks. I have had them for close to a year. This morning I came out and my smaller bamboo is swimming upside down into the sand, twirling around and acting as if he is disoriented. he is also laying out in the open and when he does his dorsal fin is curved down all the way to touching his side. What is going on? Please help thank you.

The symptoms you describe do not sound good. I have a couple of questions

1. How is the other shark?
2. Anything else in the tank, recent additions or changes?
3. Compared to the other shark, how are the respirations, color, skin integrity, clarity of the eyes or anything else you notice?
4. What do you feed them, and any change in recent feedings?
5. Was it acting normal until yesterday?
6. What are the water parameters - temp, salinity, and what additives do you use?
7. I guess the most important question, is it still alive?

1. How is the other shark? The other shark is great, swimming and eating normall.
2. Anything else in the tank, recent additions or changes? There is a zebra moray and a large batfish.
3. Compared to the other shark, how are the respirations, color, skin integrity, clarity of the eyes or anything else you notice? The respirations are much faster. It looks like he is hyperventilating.
4. What do you feed them, and any change in recent feedings? I feed them silversides mainly and chopped squid clams etc.
5. Was it acting normal until yesterday? I was out of town over the weekend. When i left friday he was perfect.
6. What are the water parameters - temp, salinity, and what additives do you use? Temp: 78 Salinity: 1.023 Alkalinity: 2.86 Nitrate: 5 Phosphate: .25 Ammonia: None Nitrite: None PH: 8.4
7. I guess the most important question, is it still alive? Yes he is still alive. But not looking well at all.

Two more questions - does it have a startle reflex? Bang on the glass or turn off the lights. Does something happen. If so, it is retarded or exaggerated - meaning that it slams the glass or swims circles. Compare it to the other shark.

Also - when was the last time it ate and did it have an extremely large meal?

no it doesn't have a startle reflex which is odd. normally if you bang on the glass he zooms in to a rock however i bang on it and he doesnt move he either lays on the ground or he just keeps swimming upside down in to the sand. He ate friday before i left. Same size meal as normal it was nothing unusual. He is a voracious eater however when i put silversides in the tank this afternoon to see if he would have a reaction he just laid on the bottom not moving which is completely unlike him. My other shark came out as normal and ate.

I have seen fish act like this from ammonia poisoning. But you say the ammonia is zero? have you cleaned your filters? If so perhaps you are going through a mini cycle from over-cleaning. Just a thought, hope he recovers.

Correct ammonia is zero. All the other fish are ok. He is now curled up upside down in a ball with his tail wrapped up to his head. But he is still alive because he periodically flips. I banged on the glass but he didnt even move.
