I've had my BGK for about a year and a half now, and he's been doing just fine in my community tank.
But for the past few days, he's been spending more and more time out of his usual hidey hole, and since I just made my tank a planted tank, I thought maybe he was just being exploratory, or something. But no :[ Today I woke up to him lying on his side in some of the floating plants, not even moving. I plucked him out with a net and placed him in the open water, where he now just hangs listlessly and just barely moving or breathing. His sides poof out a little bit, and when I submerge him to the bottom of the tank, he bobs back to the surface again.

This 55 has been set up almost two years and is well-established. Parameters are 0/0/<25, the way they should be. While the tank is a bit overstocked (curse my fish lovingness), I have been doing regular weekly water changes, and none of the other fish have been showing any signs of distress or sickness.

What in the world could be wrong with my fishie? How would I even go about treating him?

Thanks for any help!

it could also be that you didnt stagger the lighting and c02 correctly? I know that when my filter failed my bgk suffocated really quickly but i was able to save the indos by getting some water movement in.

If it's bloat try some epsom salt... which is NOT the same as the usual "aquarium salt."

If it's low oxygen, I would try an immediate dip in methylene blue (helps the fish breath easier), and then return the fish and set up something like an airstone in the tank.

^agreed. Try an airstone immediately and see if you can get the oxygen levels up asap. If after a couple of hours he isn't showing signs of improvement, then you can proceed to treat for bloat. You may have to isolate so the others don't pick on him. Do you have a breeder net available?

Good luck...
