So as storm Nemo started my black ghost knife started acting weird. She normally came out for feeding time and didn't. My first sign something was wrong. Next, a couple hours later she wasn't in her normal hallow log. She was in a very tight area between rocks. So this morning I woke up and found her alive, on her side kinda on deaths door, her anal fin shredded, grey coloring behind her gills and heavily breathing. I have had her since November 17th and she was doing really well since this incident. So what changed in the tank was i got a moon light gourami and a male blue paradise(rescue from school, i go to an aquaculture high school) Tank is a 29 gallon, with red dwarf gourami, moonlight gourami, two cory cats(emerald and long fin) and a hujeta gar. Yes ik that the ghost knife currently 4 1/2" inches will have to go to a bigger tank. Currently cycling a 75 gallon for her. So can you tell what wrong with her. To recap her anal fin is shredded, grey around the gills, tail fin is reddish(bleeding like) and is curved on her side like she is dead. Tomorrow will be my chance to go to a store to get supplies Everything had been closed because of Nemo and has had terrible timing so is their anything i can do or? She is currently in her own tank(10 gallon bow front, 50% water from old tank other new). Anything would help thank you. Also test kit is on list to get, ran out last week so i can't tell you levels of anything.:cry::(

Doesn't sound good:( So this happened over night?

The tank is much too small and ammonia could have built up causing red burns on her back fin. A black ghost knife needs at least a 100 gallon long and wide tank. Stress could have also led it to its demise. Even though you are preparing a larger tank it just could have been too long.

yes for the most part from what i know of, i personally think that the paradise did it :irked: because i had researched that they can be aggressive at times. Although he is extremly reclusive and sits behind the filter 90% of the time.

i do water changes twice a week of 10% to prevent that so i dont think that could have caused it

Ghost fish are super, super sensitive to water quality, tankmates, the aggressive/territorial paradise fish could have done it easily as well as any male gourami in breeding season. The next time you purchase them make sure the tank has been seasoned for 6-8 months before the fish goes in the 75g.

Not enough. Especially in that tiny tank you should have been doing 65% changes. Oh and moving water from your old tank to the 10g one will only hurt your fish since all you are moving is nitrates.

Did he make it? Definitely don't treat with any medications containing copper. I laughed pretty hard at a 4 1/2" fish needing a 100 gallon tank right this very moment.

she sadly died later that night and yes she didn't need a 100 gallon yet and i did not use copper bc they are scales and are very sensitive to those meds.. I had done my research on them so ik what i was getting into, but i never seen a case like what i had and i was a little stumped. Im sad that she died but it a lesson learned and right now im deciding what to get if i should get get and another BGK and give it another go once my 75 is cycled or a different oddball, any ideas?

At that size you definitely don't need a 100 gallon wide tank as long as the water quality is very good and they are sensitive to medicines
