cleaned the tank yesterday. woke up this morning and one of my larger discus was upside down in the top corner of my tank...not on his side upside down, completely upside down. it took me a few seconds to even notice the difference. Whats going on? I switched food a while back to hikari micro pellets, fed them right before I went to sleep yesterday....could it be that he has bloat? swim bladder?

I opened the tank top and touched the fish, he freaked a bit, but was right-side up for a bit, but the whole time it's like he's struggling to stay upright....

his stomache is quite large compared to the rest of the fish.....

there also seems to be a smaller discus that is kinda swimming a bit hard, like he's fighting floating upside down as well.

what can I do?

There are several types of disease that can cause bloating. One is just constipation from a to rich diet, bacterial infections, worms, and protozoans can also cause it.
If it is a cichlid the most common reported cause is a protozoan, this is treated with metronidazol.
For dietary problems add something with rufage such as dried mystis, shelled canned green peas, or for quick treatment you can treat the water with epsoms salt.
If it is worms try praziquantel, this is not a bad idea for any wild caught or pond raised fish.

thanks, I believe I need to stock my med chest with some metro. sucks tho'

if it's just constipation, what do you do? quit feeding for awhile obviously, but other than that?

Sorry to hear about your fish. One of my parrots came down with a swim bladder infection or bloat. I have been treating it for 3 weeks. I was ready to give up and I did one final water change and he suddenly got better. I guess this goes to show you nver give up. If you have the problem again read the tread on bloat. It helped me out. I didnt think my fish had a chance.
