I have a red parrot thats been bloated for close to a week now. Ive tried everything. I raised the temp to 85 added salt, medication, feed it pees, and the fish is still bloated. After I added the meds I waited 4 days, did a 25% water change, and added more meds. The fish is still bloated. Other then that it seems healthy. But it has a hard time swimming it keeps going towards the top. The fish looks healthy other then a little bit bloated, and a hard time swimming. It still swims around and eats. What should I do????? Do I keep him in the tank or get rid of him or what?????I dont know what else to do. Do I keep him in the tank and just let him swim around upsidedown or what. I dont want the other fish to get infected. But I have treated the entire tank and this is the only fish thats bloated. I think I might know what caused it. My yunger brother went fishing 2 weeks ago and put his minnows in the tank for the Oscars to eat. He didnt know you cant or shouldnt do that. But what should I do with the fish??? Is there anything esle I can do????

What med have you been using? What do you mean you "added more meds"? Are his scales protruding? It seems you are losing patience on this. You should realize not all cases of bloat are successfully treated. Why did you treat the entire tank anyway? Isolate it and use carbon to remove the meds from the main tank. Update us your water parameters afterwards.

What food are you also giving it?

I removed all the fish exacpt another red parret. I put the other ciclids in a larger tank. I wanted to treat the entire tank because of my brother putting minnow from the gas station in the tank. Im afraid I got some type of bacteria in the tank from them. Should I not of treated the entire tank???? The only reason I left the other parrot in the tank is they are always by each other, and the other ciclids pick on the parrots if they are by themselves. I used fungus clear- It says it treats bloat. It also says if its not cuered in 4 days do a 25% water change and treat them again. Wich is what I did. I did a 50% water change before I treated them the first time then 3-4 days later I did a 25% water change and retreated them. I raised the water temp to 85 and also added salt. I always feed the ciclids CICLID VEGI FORMULA from ocean nutrition. I also have pellats just for the red parrots- but they prfer the other stuff. I guess I did go with the cheap meds from walmart but I thought it would work. Do you suggest I go to the lfs an get meclyme? I checked the tank and the ph is at 8.2 , amonia-0 , nuitrates-0. Does that seem alright. I also removed the carbon before adding the meds. Do you think I should still remove the parrot and just treat him in a 10gal. tank??? I thought it would be best to treat the entire tank since he put the minnows in it. What do you think????? What else can I do??? If I cant cure it should I keep the parrot in the tanks as long as he is alive or will it hurt the iter fish? He seems healthy besides floating to the top. He still wants to eat and occasionally swims around. What do you think????????????????

Yes. Ive done everything on it except I used a diferant type of med for the bloat instead of metronidazone. I raise temps, treated with salt, did water changes, ect.... I might get that type of medication and try again. If I cant cure it should I remove the fish from the tank or just let him live out his life upsidedown swiming around?????? Can this hurt other fish in the tank????

Personally, I would try the metronidazole treatment regime suggested by Oddball.
Also maybe add some Epsom salts.
Give it a chance to work while continuing with frequent water changes.

Then, if the fish still hasn't improved I would euthanase it. IMO it wouldn't be fair to let the fish continue living indefinately like that. Or risk the possibility of transmitting disease to any tankmates.

Good luck

I think meds sometimes are worse than just w/c and salt.

Agreed

QUICK UPDATE- HE is doing alot better. I think I would have to agree with you guys on the meds. I did a 80% water chang and put carbon back in the media tray. Within a day he was swing upright and looked alot better. He lost a little bit of his coloring, but he looks alot heatier. He is not floating to the top of the tank, and is not breathing as heavily. I was ready to give up after 3 weeks of trying everything. I guess this goes to show you dont give up. Thanks for all the advise!!!!!!!!!!!!!
