Help, brown stuff growing on plant

Ok, I've had these driftwood plants for around 6-7 months now and just recently brown mucky stuff started growing on them. I don't think it's algae because my Chinese algae eater would've eaten some of it and he hasn't touched it! What is it? Is it dangerous?

Try rubbing it off. I did that once a month for a couple months and it stopped coming back...

chinese algae eaters wont eat every type of algae. chances are its either beard algae or hair algae. Like others have said try rubbing it off the leaves with your fingers.
