Hello i was looking at some of the diy 3d back grounds on here. I would like to build one may self but i cant get hold of styrofoam. I can get hold of polystyrene but thats much more crumbly i was just looking for some ways of making 3d back grounds with out styrofoam i would realy apriceate some help if i get some help i will post some pics of me making it as im starting my led rope lighting soon :wall::wall::wall::wall::wall::wall:

Not sure what you have for hardware stores over in the U.K. In the states you can find insulation styrofoam sheets 2" thick at places like Lowes and Home Depot. A hardware store would probably be my first stop.

well i rang b & q and they had no styrofoam they had sprayable insulating foam in cans and a yellow type foam that was rolled up like a quilt but nothing like styrofoam its to flexable the only thing a bit like styrofoam was polystyrene

I see the irony, your in the UK, you can get a different nationality in between your sheets every night, yet something simple and you hit a road block..lol

If you cant buy them through normal channels, fish shop, sheet producers, ect, & google doesn't bring anything up in your area, then i suggest you go to the markets, and start with the vegi guys, im pretty sure these boxes are universal & the bloke selling is a wog named Con. :D

If no luck, look into lightweight crete mixes to sculpt your own.

The spray-can foam might work if you don't mind sculpting everything yourself. I've seen some threads where others have used it. I've used some for actually insulating stuff, and once it dries (24-48 hours) it's almost hard as rock. Could be sculpted from that point. Think I've read that it needs to be sealed though for aquarium use (layer of epoxy or something). Not sure if it's toxic to fish or not.

thanks for the reply i think i will have a go with the spray foam i would seal it with an epoxy pond paint theres see through, black, green, and stone effect ive seen post on here were he used egg crate and tyed rocks to the egg crate then gone between the rocks with spray foam ill have a mess a round with it and see were i get ill post some pics if it goes well :WHOA:

ive allso thourght of putting cement derectly onto the back of the aquarium and then molding it into rock like shapes then sealing it with pond epoxy paint
