What do I need to do to build a sturdy stand for a 55g? All help, pics, and tips appreciated.

Theres alot of variables to take into account- do you know your capabilities? is it going in the garage or living room? is it glass or acrylic? is it plumbed for a sump? does the tank have rounded corners? should it be enclosed? is the bottom frame exactly 48" or is that the glass/ acrylic measurement? will another tank go below? once those things are figured out the actual stand is pretty easy

is it going in the garage or living room?

Basement, but I still want it to look nice.

is it glass or acrylic?

glass

is it plumbed for a sump?

no.

does the tank have rounded corners?

no.

should it be enclosed?

doesn't matter.

is the bottom frame exactly 48" or is that the glass/ acrylic measurement?

standard 55.

will another tank go below?

no.

if u want something simple and pretty quick check out my album i built a stand for my 75g in like 40min ish maybe less. cost was like 38bucks all the wood and i had extra plywood- i had plan to use it for something else so really the material cost was like 30ish.. i used 2x4 and a 2 pieces of plywood- one for the flat surface and one in the middle somewhat for support

Do you have any problems at all with support? These tanks weigh a lot...

I'd do a search for DIY Stands in this discussion forum. I'm sure that you can find one that will work for your needs. Most of the DIY's have pictures already posted that will help you out.

also you can customize their spefications to fit your particular needs!

naw it's fine, although you can add more 2x4 or if you really want the extra support you can use 4x4 instead but i dont think its necessary- at least not for a 55g =D post some pics when you're done

I will post pictures. Plenty of 2X4's laying around here. But if the wood cracks once it is all set up I am going to be so pissed. (at myself)
lol

I built one for my 75 gal that was pretty much like the one here http://www.city-data.com/forum/hobbies-recreation/462966-diy-aquarium-stand-lots-photos-first.html except I didn't put a center brace across the top, and I left the top of the stand open. Also, since my 75 is longer and heavier I did put a vertical support 2x4 in the center of the front and back of the stand. Everywhere I had a joint I screwed and glued with gorilla glue, including where the 2x4's are sandwhiched to make a 4x4 in the corner. Very simple, very strong.

Even though its a standard 55 If you already have the tank you really should check the tanks frame size just too be safe on side. Also since its glass if you choose not to enclose the sides you dont need to close the top and I personally wouldnt close the bottom either way. The link redchaser put up looks pretty nice and also pretty basic- the guy that built it had never even stained wood before! I wouldve put the legs facing front and back not the sides. I also would put 1 2x4 leg inside the frame and the other on the bottom and under the top sandwiched to the 1st 2x4- I hope you can picture what Im saying. Good luck
