my 8-9" motoro has got a heater burn and is not acting normally.
she keeps burying herself in the sand and is not very active.
she is eating a little but i am worried.
is she gonna die??

she is also breathing quite heavily.

First, you need to find a solution so the ray does not get another burn, ie. cover it with a PVC pipe that has openings through, like drill through it, or cut a saw through it. Second, watch the injury and make sure it is not developing infection. How often do you do water change? what is the current temperature of the tank.

rapid breathing isnt a good sign, have you looked into giving it asprin, about 300mg/gallon will help calm the fish and some aloe vere will help heal the burn.

i would just put salt in the water to prevent secondary infection to the heater burn
how big was it? burns usually heal by themselves. Its the infection that you should watch out for. Like Vince said , you should get a heater guard or find a way that the ray doesnt get burned again.

Add lots of extra oxygen to the water..

Use some aquarium salt as a tonic, it will lower stress levels.

Cover the aquarium and remove any possible stresses.. no lights, etc..

Extra water changes, and make sure she keeps feeding. Use live foods if you have to.. Worms are always nutritious.

I would stay away from any other medications like aspirin, aloe, stress coat, or melafix. It might cause problems. I have succesfuly used Melafix on rays before, but not nearly a full dosage. Other reports have told me that Melafix can be detrimental to the rays..

Agreed!

well said....

thanks for the advice
i have put a cover an the heater,it is usually covered by rocks but i think my aro knocked them over during the night.
the lights are off and the temp is 79deg.
i do 25% water change every monday, but will probably do 10% everyday at the moment.
it is quite a long burn but not very deep.
there is a lot of oxygen in the tank.
water parameters are nitrite 0 ammonia 0 nitrate 10ppm ph 7.

Nitartes 10 get rid of them

Nitrates are removed through water change, plus 10ppm is not nearly toxic. Actually that is around the norm after a good feeding. Once you change the water, your nitrates will go down, and then elevate again once the bacteria has processed the ammonia and nitrites. Best to do right now is to follow the above suggestions (Miles), and RTF (redtailfool). Your idea of 10% daily might be just about the right amount to do. Just keep a close eye, and if the burn is not deep, most likely it will heal. Make sure it is eating :) Keep us posted
