One of my Convicts is not looking too well at all these days. He's been moping in the corner of the tank for awhile. I can't see any visible signs of major problems, except he does have some clouding around one eye. Other than that there just some bite marks from the other Convict trying to get him up.

When he swims around, he seems a little off balance. When he stops swimming he sinks straight to the bottom of the tank, then flops on his side.

I've got no idea what this is.

Could anyone here shed some light on this for me?

Cheers.

a 10 gal is more than fine for this situation.

Keep an airstone on the max setting, as it's important for a lot of oxygen to reach it's gills when he can't properly swim to obtain it.

Keep warm waters 84'ish, and don't add salt as it stresses out the already stressed fish. (and there is no immediate healing needed it sounds like)

Low flow in the tank, but again, high surface irritation.

Will he recover from this? Or could this just be his time to go? Is this common behaviour for fish that are dying from natural causes?

Sounds like it has been stressed out by it's tank mates. Some convicts live over 10 years, so i doubt it's just old age getting to it.

Sounds to me like some sort of Bacteria infection with the cloudy eye. I tend to get very nervous when it comes to treatment. I would isolate the fish for the time being and raise the temp. in the hostpital tank. You may have to resort to some type of antibiotic like Penicillum or risk loosing the fish. Its been my experience that when they start sinking to the bottom you're in trouble.

cloudy eyes and sinking, this fish doesnt ave long
