Hey, ill start with my system. I have a 180 gallon Sw setup. I have a simple 2 light T5 fixture, 3 power heads, sump, glass top, PM protein skimmer bullet 3. My tank was at 86 degrees cycling. I would like to eventually get rays, a shark, eel, and maybe a puffer. Mt question how can i get my water temp down without a chiller. I tried no heater, no glass top, shutting 2 powerheads, and venting the cabin. My temp is now 80 but it still a little warm for sharks and rays.

who told you 80 is to much? thats perfect lol 86 isnt even to bad its just a bit warm. keeping it at 80 would be perfect even 82 if u wanted

I think the biggest problem you are going to run into is the size of your tank. A 180 is a great size for most SW eels and puffers, but when it comes to sharks and rays, it is way too small.

If you want to cool your tank a chiller is by far the best option. Running a SW tank without tops and blowing a fan across the top doesn't work well, the salinity swings from evaporation will be hard on your fish and the salt creep will get all over the place.

oh saltwater Nevermind my post

Im still taking it slow, but im going to start with my eel. Its a big jump from my 40 gallon high. But if 80 isnt bad then that releives me alot. My 40 gallon always between 75-78. So i got worried. I have some chromis and damsels in there now and there all doing fine. I will def be posting pics and maybe videos when its all set

Most tropical species (which is the vast majority of what fish stores stock) are perfectly happy at 78-80, even a bit more.

Good luck with the new monster tank!

I shoot for 77 for my 375 (+125g sump). Also, I think my 375 is probably a little too small for most species of sharks and rays. There are a few species that would do ok, but I think I would be pushing it with most.

You could try using egg crate for tops with some cheap fans with a auto top off deal with evaporation. Was able to lower my tank temp 10 degrees using this method. I have seen some DIY chilers using refridgerator coils?
