I read a while ago about a way to cycle a tank by someone here that used ammonia to do it without the dead animal product in there. Anyone know where it was I couldn't find it on search. Trying to help out a friend.

brian bro take it easy you are way to up tight. Just asking. lol you said for pete's sake thats funny

Thanks night unfortunatley that link did not work.

There have been several studies done and those bottled tank cyclers, do not work. There was a poll not to long ago all about it, that had several good informal links to these said studies.------------ to the OP --if you can not find the link you are looking for just do a general internet search for fishless cycling. And you should be able to find more than you need.

Lol I cycled my tank with safe start or start safe(forgot name) but it's the new bio spira. All of my fish survived and it was cycled within a week or less. They do work.

I can assure you, that in my hands, Stability performed flawlessly and IMO is one of those rare products that does precisely what it claims that it will do. First, you have to understand the technical premise for this product (I was initially also skeptical). This is not "bottled bacteria", which would certainly not survive on a store shelf. Rather, this product contains bacterial "spores". Under conditions of induced environmental stress, bacteria will encapsulate themselves into a durable survival structure, designed to preserve their DNA and rudimentary metabolic machinery. Seachem then adds some type of inhibitor to this solution which prevents the bacteria from reentering into their metabolically active vegetative state. When the spore suspension is added to the aquarium, the inhibitor is diluted and the spores become metabolically active. This is a neat trick.

The specific species of bacteria employed in Stability are proprietary and on occasion, you will hear someone state that the correct or "optimal" species are not present. I'm not sure how they know that, but let's assume it's true. Frankly, it doesn't matter. The objective of this product type is to rapidly establish a biofilter which will assimilate nitrogenous waste. It is completely irrelevant if the bacterial demographics change over time in response to specific environmental conditions. In fact, this is anticipated.

I cycled a 350 gallon tank in eight days...no kidding. The only thing I did differently was to add a couple of teaspoons of organic cane sugar at the start to provide a carbon source for the bacteria.

Fishless cycling certainly has merit and its technical premise is quite logical. I just think using Stability is a lot easier.
