I have a 240 long (8x2x2) That houses a 24" Silver Arowana, and 10 polypterus range from 8" to 15". I want to add a colorful fish that will be big enough to not get eaten. The popular opinion is... "GET A DAT!"

I'd love to....but I know nothing about them, and they aren't easy to find. A LFS near me has one, but it is in a brackish tank. I have seen people keep them in fresh on this site, right? Are they from different regions, so different kinds need different water? My water is soft and acidic.

The one the LFS has is only a couple of inches. How long would it take me to grow it big enough to go in that tank?
Do they like to live in groups? The small one is 30 bucks....so a group would be expensive to kill.

I gotta think the 2 foot long arowana will make a quick meal out of the Dat that is only a couple inches long.

Thats what I was thinking....I saw some 7-8" dats at a LFS and got excited.... but they weren't for sale...the small ones were a forty dollar snack for the Aro.

So I'm trying to figure out what tank I can grow out some fish. Most of my tanks are too aggressive for a little dat, or too small for growing out.

If I could guess what happens.....I'm buying the next one I see anyway and moving fish around.

well just from what ive heard...most datnoids are really Slow growers...it could take bout 2 years or more to grow to near the 8-10" spot. And as for the ones that are big already...see if you can make them change their mind...And as for some brackish datnoids...some are brackish some are not so you should do some research on each type...so you know which is right and perfect for you tank =D

GOT ONE!! Went where HiImSean got his. They had one left. I think it is an IT. It was $30. WAY better looking that the $40 ones at the other place...just a tiny bit smaller.
When I got home he had turned all dark, but after slowly acclimating him to his new home he looks PERFECT. I fed some brine shrimp and it ate like a pig.
I decided to put it in with my Firemouths that are the same size. I was worried they might go after him, but they don't. Too busy chasing each other. Plus there is a ton of hiding places in that tank...the Dat goes from one to another exploring the tank for the best spot to chill.
I'll post some pictures here soon...:headbang2
