a few days ago, my discus started doing the "clamped fin" on his left side... it was still eating and swimming fine. very eager to come towards the food. then i noticed where his clamped fin was, on his body, had a little skin irritation. yesterday, i moved him into a hospital tank (40g, but filled up a little more than half way). i added 4 tablespoons of salt... this morning, i woke up, he now has popeye... 1 eye is cloudy and has seemed to poped out.. its not punctured, just bulging out... i went out to get some maracyn, and so added 2 packs in there. (1 bag/ 10g = 2 packs for my current tank). i also bought another heater bc the one heater i had in there was not strong enough.. i set the temp for 89 degrees...

any comments, tips, suggestions are great appreciated... btw, PH is at 6.6-6.8 (light green on the ph scale)

Sounds like you have all the bases covered. You could do more salt if you wanted, like 1.5-2tbs per 5g. Besides that just watch the tanks parameters for ammonia, nitrite, etc. And also a daily water change would only help things. It says to do one like every few days on the maracyn package i think, but more frequent willnot harm things. Just remember to treat the antibiotics and salt after each water change. Also you can use maracyn and maracyn2 at the same time if needed for the skin irratation you speak of. i would keep up the treatment for 7-10 days even if it gets better in just a few. Cause it my look better but not really be better.----------------------good luck

thank hybrid... i just siphoned out the debri on the bottom of the tank and added 2 more packets of maracyn. the fish's color is not as dark as when it was sick... which is a good sign. the eyes are still cloudy though. i have another discus in the main tank who is also showing signs of getting sick.. his body is dark, and fins are not sticking up as high as the others. i am thinking about throwing him in the hospital tank as well.

msjinkzd, the fins are no longer clamped... and the gills are not protruding out like it would if it had gill flukes. i will keep up with the medication, high temps, and partial water changes just to make sure everything is in tip top condition. i will post updates of the healing process as the fish recovers.

day 3 of hospital... colors are improving... still a bit skittish. the eyes are no longer as bulgy as the past 2 days... i did a 2-3 gal water change and replaced with untreated water... then added 2 packets of maracyn. i will try to get some pics up asap...
