I just got my ebjd on Friday from a lfs. Next day I noticed he wasn't really eating and noticed some salt like flakes on his head and top fin. Today, I took a closer look and sure enough you can tell it's ick. He must've had it when I got him from the lfs. I have some Mandrel I am treat the whole tank with it. I have a 120 gallon that the ebjd is in along with a Bala shark, rainbow shark and a geo. All are only 1in long. I took out all of my carbon filters and treated the tank 1 drop per gallon. But I only did 60 drops instead of 120 drops in fear of losing my ebjd and over medicating the tank.

Should I up my temp from 79 to 81? Do you think my ebjd will make it treating the tank with Mandrel? It's a beautiful fish and I paid $40 for a 1in ebjd. It's the local fish store that carries them. Any input will be appreciated. Thanks.

Do a 50% water change and a good substrate vacuming. Increase the temperature to 88 degrees, this will excelerate the life cycle. The ich will appear worse before it gets better. It should get better in about 5 days but keep the heat up for 10 days. You should use the medacation at the prescribed strenth or as an altunative to meds you could do the water change up the temp and add 1 tablespoon of salt per 5 gallons of water. Change 25% of the water every other day and replaced the salt removed by the water change. Do this for 2 weeks, even if all signs of ich are gone.

As and aside small EBJDs are delacate and will benifit if you keep the tank temp at about 82-84 degrees once the ich is cured.

I am battling the same problem with my EBJD. He is about 2 1/2 inches long. My LFS recommended copper safe. That is what I have been treating with for 3 days now. He does appear to have more spots now than he did but, I did notice that he was out and swimming more than he had been yesterday. I was wondering is there anything in particular to feed them when they have ick. The LFS said to try frozen peas. He had no interest in them whatsoever and doesn't appear to be eating very much.

It's not uncommon for them to go off their feed during this. Instade of the copper safe you can treat as discribed above if you choose to go a no med route. I don't usually use meds for ich heat and salt will cure it. Once the ich subsides it should start eating normally again. If it doesn't start eating after the ich is gone you might want to treat for IPs. Wate until the ich is gone and see how it's doing.

Thank you. I wish I had known about the salt before I started the copper safe. I assume the two are not safe to use together. Correct? I am diligent with partial water changes. My substrate is sand so I vacuum every 2 to 3 days and change 1/4 of the water. About every 3rd time I change 1/2 the water. The water stays crystal clear.

Thanks for all the input. But my ebjd died about a week ago. All my water parameters were good and I did treat the ick. It actually went away but he still wasn't eating. Later that night, when I was feeding the fish I noticed he was swimming up near the filter and just staying there. After about a couple of hours he died. I guess from what I read these fish are not all that hearty. All my other fish are doing great in my tank. 1 jack dempsey, red Texas/midas hybrid, rainbow shark, geo and a Bala shark.

Ebjd are very beautiful fish but it's the last time I spend $40 from a lfs for it. And was only a 1".

My EBJD died also. He just couldn't battle back from the Ich. His tank mates which are BGJD's are doing just fine and never showed any symptoms. I will continue with treatment as directed and am going to leave the temp up on my tank for another couple of days. I don't think I will invest in anymore of EBJD's. They are just too fragile.

Sorry to hear this. Small EBJD's are fragile until they hit the 3" mark after that they seem to be ok. They sterss easaly. They need to be kept with very mellow tanks mates and kept in very celan, warm water with no bullying.

Yup. I agree with you. I have a new one that I bought on Saturday. But he is not eating and I could have sworn he has signs of ick on him. I just did a 50% water change cause I noticed some of his tank mates were rubbing there scales on the rocks. If my new ebjd doesn't make it that's it. I am not going to invest more money in that fish. I have a regular jd and a red texas/midas hybrid fry in there. And there doing great. Eating and no signs of ick.
