In Total Boredome!
hi. Ok i've not been on monster fish for a long time now, so i've forgotten alots of things.
My goldfish has got serious finrot () and i dont have rock salt. So just asking if sea salts alright?

Plz i need help asap!:(

Hi Fillyfolly,

Please calm down and don't panick over salt and treatments. Could you please post your water parameters? Please be sure you are using liquid test kits by API to have accurate results. Test strips are inaccurate unfortunately and therefore, entirely unreliable.

Secondly, I would like to know your tank size and other fish in it. What strain is this goldfish? Is it a fantail? Pearlscale? Comet? Tank size really matters as the overall space influences the rapid deterioration of the water quality contributed by the massive production of wastes by goldfish. There are also plenty of fish that see their long trailing fins as a nipping temptation. If I were you, please feed your goldfish once a day only within 2-3 minutes and fast a day per week to help you keep your water quality in better control.

As far as guidelines are concerned, when you consider common goldfish, comets, wakins, jikins or shubunkins, make it 20g per fish to pave space as these ones truly grow monstrous to 12-18 inches. Fancy goldfish such as orandas, ryukins, black moors and many others, on the other hand, should be permitted at least 10-15g per fish.

In cases involving finrot, water changes are your main defense. Finrot is caused either by bacterial infections or rapid deterioration of water quality. Both cases can be rectified by water changes. Could you please post your filtration capacity and tank maintenance regimen?

Salt is not the answer to your problem. Salt has its limits in its scope and can only do much for instance, ich and nitrite intoxication, neither of which are involved in your case as it seems to me. Avoid the use of salt as it is totally unnecessary and useless in your case.

Without the needed information as indicated by my questions above, I cannot proceed to further advisory with very vague details. Please answer as much as you can so we may be able to prevent the situation from worsening in time.

Hi!
Umm...i havent forgotten everything, and my tanks only of goldfish like black moors, orandas, ryukins and fantails. And my fantail's got finrot. The tank is big and there is enough oxygen. All i need to know whether sea salts okay to be used for goldfish.

I answered in my previous post, salt is not the answer to your situation, dear. Your tank sounded overcrowded to me. How big is it exactly? Could you please give the dimensions? How big are the goldfish? What is your tank maintenance regimen (precisely, water changes)?

my tank has a case of 'the rot' also. i literally shed a tear. Its my first 'big' tank but ive been in and out of the hobby for 20years. For some reason I never had a problem with disease until this go around. I have a 60 long all my water param.s are "text book" ( i use a not so local FS to test) for the fin rot i did an intial %50 water change followed by %25 daily (as perscribed) and no lights , and fasting , and using tertracycline ....I am on the morning of day three so hopefully all goes well. GOOD LUCK with the Goldfish

A 60g tank. My fish are not really big exept for my ryukins. I have a pair of each.
You do realize all your fancy goldfish can reach 8-10 inches, right? It'll work for the time being but they'll eventually need a larger tank. It is not surprising that finrot took over one of your goldfish as your tank is actually overcrowded. How often do you really feed? You have not answered some of my questions yet such as tank maintenance regimen. All questions I asked earlier are quite relevant in this situation.

Salt and antibiotics are not the solution here. The actual solution is plenty of water changes and cutting back on feeding to at least once a day only followed by a day fasting per week.

Thanks! And water changing is done once in 2 weeks.
That's really inadequate. I suggest doing at least 30% twice a week as the standard. Do daily for now until condition improves.

thanks again! And Oh yeah, although i havent been on for a long time. I do remember that you were into loaches and other big fish before. How come goldfish all of a sudden?
