I have successfully kept a 3" endlicheri with a similar sized spotted gar for quite some time now. But yesterday night, the endlicheri died abruptly. He was behaving normally prior to death, lounging around the bottom of the tank and surfacing once in awhile when all of a sudden he began dashing about the tank, and floated to the surface upside down. He had not been eating several days before this. What are the possible causes?!?!

Sorry for your loss bro,if he had not been eating, did you try anything to make make him eat or did you think he would just start eating again sometime soon, how long had he not been eating and did he have any boyancy problems before he died?

Any substrate in the tank? Any wounds on the body?

i had some pebbles as substrate, but it was not enough to cover the bottom of the tank. no wounds, but there appeared to be a lump on his throat. :(

i tried crushing jumbo sinking pellets and dropping them into the water. i also put some small guppies for him to eat if he wanted to. the last thing he had eaten before his death was a juvenile channa micropeltes i had put to be his tankmate. he had stopped eating for about...a week, or slightly less. i had suspected it was a problem with the filter, but the spotted gar was fine and had a healthy appetite. i think he had some difficulties with buoyancy prior to his death, yes.

Could have eaten some of the pebbles and wasn't able to passed it out the anus. That's why not many would recommend using gravel or pebbles as substrates for bichirs. They sometimes accidentally swallow them along with the food they sucked up. Sand is much safer.

sorry for your loss..
