HELP!! External Overflow. What is this???

I got these 2 things with a used tank. I'm just wondering what they really are. I believe the item in the right of the picture is an external overflow box. But how about the left item? I have no idea what it actually is. Please help me ID it.
Anyone know how much these things worth? Thank you in advance.

overflow boxes... pporbably they put some media's on it so it might act like a filter, and it goes straight in the sump ...so filter ...filter and filter.. thn redirect it in the sump...

so probably the previous owner had those ideas...

well it looks like an overflow box..

The one with the blue stuff is an incomplete protein skimmer. I am suprised no one noticed the red algae an indication of a salt setup.
