Hi there,

Ok so here is my problem. I had 3 giant gourami's in a 10 foot tank with some paroon sharks, 2 RTC, pacu an a african chichilid. Previously i have had no problems except for the AC being a little territorial. Recently one of the gouramis attacked the other two! One was quite injured and ended up dying probably from the stress. Several days later the second one was badly attacked leaving me with yet another death! Why? What could cause this type of behaviour? Recently he has also begun to pick on the chichilid who now has some torn up fins?! The gouramis and chichilid were all around the same size so that is not the cause. I have also increased the amount of food they get in case lack of food was the problem. Please help!! Also ph is around 7.5~7.7
Thanks in advance.

Seems the territorial issues to me. Doesn't matter if you have a 10' tank. It's overcrowded imo

Most giant gourami's become very peaceful when they reach adulthood, but there are some that are just mean and should be kept alone.
I have a 8" in my 225 and hes really peaceful, in fact hes quite timid. but I have heard of some that were absolute terrors.

It's always funny when a Gourami becomes aggressive. My old Gourami used to try and chase the Oscars around, until he ended up with half of his head missing. :nilly:

I do think it is partly overcrowding that is the issue. Its strange as he was absolutely fine until now. I would say due to the size the gourami will be almost a complete adult. Any ideas on how to stop tge agression?? I really dont want to deal with another death :/

were they showing signs of spawning? he could have been very territorial if breeding was involved...

I find most fish will get aggressive when they become mature, and are overcrowded. I had 3 of the true giant gouramis that were fine until they reached the 2 ft mark, then they became aggressive, even though they were the only fish in a 6 ft tank. I have since reevaluated keeping such large fish in such a small puddle (tank).
I expect you will have more and more aggression, because your tank is too small for the fish you are keeping, gouramis or not. If you said it was 10' X 10' X 10' tank it might be different.

Yep i definately think the overcrowding is the issue. I sonr think they were spawning as i did not see any signs or behaviours relating to it. The problem i live in a house that we have rented (as buying is way to hard in singapore) and i would not have put those types of fish in there in the first place. The time may have to come though when we have to re-home some of the larger fish.
Thankyou for the replies!
