I introduced a 5 inch female flowerhorn to my 7 inch male flowerhorn, now all the male does is chase her around and bite at her, hes tearing her up pretty bad, i spent 250.00 on the female to, I now have them devided, i am gonna wait for her to drop her tube, and them separated the divider, my question is do i have to do this everytime they mate, do i have to divided them after they mate??? or after they get to know each other can they live peacefully after that without a divider ???????

Not too experienced with FH but you can leave a gap under the divider so the female can lay and the male can fertilize. I think after they pair up they will not fight anymore.

what size tank is it?

did you divide the tank first and introduce that way?

was her tube down when you put them together?

how long has the male been solo?

what kind of divider you using?

Right now i only have a 100 gallon tank, and no i made the mistake of introducing them at first without the divider, ( like a dumb ass) now i have them divided, it was only for about a half hour that i intorduced that way, and the male has had his new tank to him self for a little over 24 hours, and no her tube wasnt down when i introduced them together........ i am useing a divider that i had got from pets mart, its a clear one and the male will not stop trying to get threw the divider, right now the female is also show a little bit of interest by going up to the divider to look at the male,

100gal 4foot or 6foot tank?

this tank (100gal) has kept the male for 24hours before you introduced your female?

one thing you must keep in mind is that both sides (male & female) will take hits during the pairing and breeding process.

this is good that you have them divided, and good signs that the female is now "checking" out the male again.

can you post some pics of the male and female, to be certain they are of different sexes?

now that you have everything set up to "set" the mood. just sit and wait till her tube STARTS to drop. you will know this when her tube is swelling and starting to come out. at this time she will be sending hormonal signals to the male, telling him she is about ready to lay, and looking for a potential mate.

how is the tank set up? like decor and such. could you post up a full tank shot too? that way we have a idea of how or where she could potentially hide from him if needed.

well hope this helps, FH can be very aggressive in breeding process, and this it can be quite difficult. or it can be the extreme opposite and no problems, and seem to be made for each other. :D

just give them more time to get accustomed to each other. also that pot appears to big enough that the male can get into too.

also i questioning if the female is actually a female. looks darn nice tho, i see y you would be bothered by the fighting :D

some ppl do separate them again once the frys have been "harvested". i generally take most and leave some to let them feel good about their spawning. with this i try to prevent pair bond issues after the "harvest".

some FH pairs if given a large enough tank will do fine together for life after the pair bond is formed. just like most other CA&SA cichlids.

well hope this helps some, gl with the pair.

thx for all your help bro, and yeah it is a little to big ill add something new in there, so the guy i bought it from said it was def a female, but now u got me thinking....... is there a for sure way to tell if its a male or female?

only definite way is if a female lays eggs, or her tube comes down as if she is about to lay. then the vent would be easy distinguishable from a males. most would agree that "most" females have a black blotch or area on the dorsal fin much like red terrors, texas, and trimac females. not always accurate, but most of the time. i'd guess 95% of the time, if it has that distinguishable mark then probably a female fh.

i currently have a fh that i have been told is female, but i have never seen her tube or even seen any eggs from her. i've had "her" for over a year now. even tried to pair "her" with few males, to see if she would lay, and nothing ever. the problem with mine is "she" is about 8inches now, and if "she" gets much larger i am gonna have major problems with "her" pairing with any male. because the male needs to dominate the female to get a breeding.

yours being 5inches, should be fairly easy to get paired up i'd think. just give them more time :D
