What are your water parameters, specifically? Temp, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates, tank size, size of fish, other stock, etc.

current set up is 55 gallon maintain temp at 79-80 degree about 3 inches by itself in tank nitrates and ammonia unknown (I'm assuming here that the water testing is going to be essential here- because I haven't been )

yeah, I would go get a water test kit and find out what your pers are. that's essential.

The first thing to look at is the parameters. I would definitely go get a test kit.

ok- thank you- going now for test kit - do these ph/amonia/nitrate levels vary from species to species meaning are the levels for a fh going to vary from the levels of let's say a green terror, or jaguar etc etc I do apologize- I am a newb at this>

ammonia and nitrate levels should be at zero... ph for a fh should be 7-8 (consistency is key here)..

FHs are generally VERY hardy (much like the red devil/midas)... but this doesn't mean they should be kept in bad conditions. GL
