about 2-3 weeks ago, i noticed an algae bloom in my tank outta nowhere. seemingly overnight. i'm new to this, so i'm going thru a friend that was helping me set this up, etc. my tank size is only a 25 gallon. so he sets it up, put a few fish in, things are fine until the algae starts. he suggests a yellow mimic tang to help get it under control, so i do. it seems to work.

following week, red slime starts. wtf? i clean it weekly. which is what he told me to do. it gets coated fast, so i ask him what to do. he says clean the tank weekly. now i'm starting to wonder why all of a sudden this starts.

this morning i notice my protein skimmer isn't getting the flow like it was. now i thought that's what went out. so i took it apart to make sure there was no blockage, it was fine. but wehn i got off work i had more time to investigate, and find this when i pull the fluval out.

there's no power to it. i plug it in, adn nothing. so i'm wondering if it's common, what to do, parts to fix, or what to replace or etc. i don't want my friend's advice anymore it's not seeming to work very well. anyone have anyth thoughts? i'm kinda desperate and i think my fish are starting to get sick now...

furthermore, when i got home, my skimmer wasn't working at all by then, and my fish are acting crazy swimming toward the powerhead? i'm getting worried. the motor to the skimmer was hot, and it doesn't seem to be getting power either now.

Sounds critical...You certainly need a new impeller so order from a retailer.

Is your backup filter working.. Get one if you don't have one. The fish are reacting to the levels of toxins in the water and the power head is the last place to get clean water or a current... An AquaCkear 50 or 70 HOB should work.

Have you checked your levels?

yeah the nitrate levels seemed high, right now this is what it's reading
gh is hard to tell but i'd say 30
kh: dark
ph:6.0
n02: 3
n03:between 40/80

i got a new filter, something to throw on there for now, and finally the fish aren't swimming so high near the top like they were, but i'm still worried. i wasn't even aware that the old one had stopped working. nemo was dead this morning and i couldn't find anything that could clearly explain to me in layman's terms what was going on, everything i found was saying something different. and then in regards to treating it before it kills my fish something else...?

i really don't know what to do. my friend says the propeller is the issue with the canister filter, i'm reading that i don't need one. the old saltwater man at the fish place suggested marineland penguin 200 filter to try to get it up to speed. said it should work quickly since it was for a bigger tank, etc. but my luck is so damn bad at this point, i got it home, and there was a damn piece missing from it.

is the fluval busted? and what do i do about my water?

your ph is very acidic it need to be up around 8.0 to 8.3 get a ph buffer secondly the fluval sound's like the impeller need's cleaned I would also wait to get ph corrected and fluval back up and running then. Get some Astrea snail's or cerith snails like 20 for the diatom algae problem. Also what is your feeding habit's how much and what kind of food? second where is your salinity?

i use the deep six gauge, salinity is right smack in the middle. how do i get the ph up where it needs to be? the fish places around here do not really stock much for salt water so i kind of have to be dummy proof when going in there to get what i need. i got a marine land penguin 200 to use cuz the fluval isn't working at all and now my protein skimmer seems to have died also all together. that could very well be my fault i probably didn't prime it correctly before rushing out the door to work. the impeller has a busted shaft on it, and it doens't seem to be getting any power. i was told it's just because of the the magnet from the propeller not working?

of course, even getting the damn marineland unit, there was a piece missing out of the box til i got it home and set it up.
it is up and running now, but the poor fish are still i'm afraid going to die..

you might have to get a whole new shaft for your fluval as far as buffer you can get that at your LFS or at petco, petsmart.
