I'd go 75 gallon same length as the 55, but deeper width. I.D. shark wouldn't be my choice maybe some nice by Silver Dollars with your Parrots or a Uaru. Just don't go too crazy on the numbers. Maybe 2 of each, parrots are supposed to get like 8 inches though it seems more common to me for them to only reach 6 inches. Same with the SD's. Might be a nice combo high orange contrasting with the Silver of the SD's.

ID Cats(Sharks) get over 3ft and would not be good for a new aquarist also stay away from Pacu and Red Tailed Catfish.....

If your spot can fit a 4ft tank then get a 75gal and really do your research before you buy ANY fish. Good Luck mate

just to clarify a 55 gallon is 48 inches long and 12 inches wide. a 75 gallon tank is just as long but is 6 inches wider, at 18 but are about an inch lower, Of course a 75 would be better but they are not as common to find, plus the stands for them are even less common.

in terms of tankmates, I'd get something that has the same diet, so that you wont have to worry about giving the wrong food to a fish. firemouth or severums would be ideal since they are also south american cichlids. you can also put in a common pleco and let it eat the algae. Although I would not suggest silver dollars as they are herbivores and blood parrots are omnivores. Trust me its really a pain having a tank with herbivores and trying to feed omnivores in it, you dont want to go that route. A clown loach, although from a different region might also work.

I get the imperssion that you are making your choices based on whats available at the local pet store. What other kinds of fish do you see there?

oh thank you for suggesting severums! I had seen one in one of my friends tanks and liked it but couldnt remember what it was called....

and I am pretty much basing my choices on what my friends have I havnt actually been to the pet store yet... my firend that has the 3 parrot fish has had them for about 5 years and they are only maybe 4 inches across? how long does it take them to get big? and also she had an ID shark in tehre (she has a 75 gallon) and had it for about 2 years and it was still only about 4 inches long but then she gave it away because she didnt like it

would I be able to cycle the tank with just an algea eater or 2? they are pretty cheep right?

If there is an ace hardware store near to you get this.

Ammonia

You can buy just a single bottle for like 3. Then do a fishless cycle. Trust me you will be less stressed and it would cost less. If you want to keep the fish safe during a normal cycle then you would have to add something like prime every day to bind the ammonia while it cycled. Prime can be used during a normal cycle to detoxify the Ammonia, and Nitrate; while still leaving it in the water for the bio media to eat.

Doing a fishless cycle can use just this product and not worry about the safety of fish.

ID shark thats 2 years old would definitely be bigger than 1ft if it had a decent environment, sounds like your friend didnt keep up with the water changes.

I also wouldnt recommend doing a cycle with fish in it unless you really HAVE to. plus plecos can be a bit sensitive when first put into a new tank, if you want to still try it with fish, go to a pet store and buy some cheep feeder goldfish, they are hardy and you can use them later as fishfood :)
