I have kept fish for many years but have never so much as held a fishing rod in my lifetime.

I am interested in taking up the sport but no zilch about it, honestly...nothing. So any information at all is appreciated.

I am especially interested in knowing if it is possible/legal to collect fish for aquarium use and if so how to go about it and what fish are available/suitable? I am situated in Northern Ireland. Portrush to be exact.

As you can see I am completely clueless but I am keen to find out as much as possible and give it a try.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

this web site should help as i dont know the full legal side to Ireland:

If your talking salt water it another kettle of fish<'(((((<

You need to get hold of the Northern Ireland environmental agency or the equivalent and fined out the laws. As for sea fishing the best way to start is a charted boat go out do a day see if you like it they supply the tackle etc etc.

Couldn't tell you much about the area you're in, me being "across the pond" and all, but I can tell you the best way to find out is to go fishing with someone that fishes often. They will be able to tell you the best gear and bait. Also research is important before keeping fish for any reason.

also: Don't get mad if your teacher won't tell you the good spots, nobody likes to do that.

i would love to do the same but all info on natives is from American . nothing for the Scots

Stotty (or any one else that knows), if i get my rod licence and a course fishing permit which grants me access to the local river, am I then free to do what I like with whatever I catch ie. take live specimens for aquariums? or is this not allowed for any reason?

In the UK a lot of the river are privately owned the lad owner / club own the river and the fish with the game licence that costs more you can take salmon and trout out as long as its permitted in that stretch of water sea fishing as far as I know it all game as its considered food once again I’m not sure on size limitation on certain species that you will need to confirm with the Environmental Agency that deals with your part of the county.:D
