This behavior occurs fairly often for these 2 after large subsequent water changes. I recently lost a filter (leaking) and redid everything with a new filter and some extra water changes to help any spiking that may have occured. For hours on end the smaller male senegal will follow the large female ornate around the tank bopping his head against her body right behind her gills. They have been together for appoximately 2 years and were both very tiny when i get them. All the previous times this occurs nothing has happened as far as eggs or additional new behaviors

Other Info:
The tanks lacks alot of decor except for the rocks in the background which are relatively new.
There are 6 bichirs and 1 gar in this tank.
It is 75 gallons and 83 degrees farenheit.

My question: Mating behavior or not?

anyone with comments and first hand experience is appreciated. thanks?

yes that is mating behavior..... almost looks like they're both male

Hi.
It's just common Polypterus flirting, not mating.
The Ornate looks to be male btw.

I had young male Delhezi that used to flirt with my huge (65cm+) female Endli pretty much all day every day. cupping his fin and all!
Didn't last too long, she got sick of his advances, and ALMOST bit his head off one time.

My del tries to nudge up against my armatus when ever hes hanging around the bottom. The armatus doesnt seem to be botherd by it at all.

Nice video. Looks like mating behavior Iv'e seen with my ornates. Great thread, Thanks! I just learned about flirting Bichers... lol.
