came out today to notice a giant hole in the bottom of my 20" fire eel!

Started treating with Melafix, thinking it's a ulcer. No other tankmates could have done this. No torn flesh only clean gaping hole.

What is this whats the best meds for this?

I do not know what it is. But anybody that does would just be guessing at best. I would be treating with antibiotics in hospital tank asap. If it is still eating I would also be applying the meds to its food.

What are you feeding?

I would STOP feeding now and for a few days until it heals on its own, if it does heal....

Not sure on the technical term, but it s a prolapsed intesitnal thingy mabobby!

Jerry any more info on that? nothing turns up in search. He ate last night. Only feeding sparingliy to keep water cleaner. So are you sure it's from the frozen shrimp? No parasites can tolerate being frozen and the food I'm using is human grade

Enter "prolapse" into the MFK search function...

Looks to me like an ulceration or deep boil which festered, then finally opened. How deep is it?

Can't be a prolapse. A prolapse is a protruding organ, usually through its own orifice.

Is he behaving loopy, like he's been bleeding at all? If he's acting normal, I'd observe it for a day and see if it is trying to heal. As you know, spiny eels don't medicate well. I'd even be hesitant about salt. Just melafix, pimafix and if it gets any worse, isolate and inspect for parasites. How's his poo?
If it's not parasites and it gets worse, it's probably bacterial, so Maracyn one and two (someone more knowledgeable could probably tell you which to use, to avoid over-medicating).
Sit and stare for awhile to make sure nothing pokes its head out of that hole.
