I received this in an email, I thought some members may be interested.

"Some important decisions for sharks were made at the recent Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), held in Qatar in March. Proposals to restrict trade in eight shark species failed to receive the required two-thirds vote majority, representing victory for narrow, short-term economic interests over science and the myriad long-term benefits of conservation.

I’m appalled at the failure of the world’s environment leaders to approve trade protections for some of the Earth’s most vulnerable and heavily traded shark species which is why I signed this petition:

Did you know each year tens of millions of sharks are killed by Earth’s most dangerous predator - humans? Populations of sharks are in big trouble but you can take action.

Sign the petition and let’s tell Governments loud and clear: sharks are vital to our ecosystem and deserve better protection."

As someone who enforces laws concerning illegal trade of sharks and a shark owner myself. I can say with extreme confidence that stricter laws on sharks will save more good sharks and keep sharks out of the hands of irresponsible owners many times over then it will affect “good owners”. I would also hope that good shark owners would not want to confine endangered species even if they were responsible with their care of the ones they owned.

To be entirely honest, now as a shark owner myself, I would rather see more people not be able to get them, and have less pressure than there is now.

Owning a shark (indeed any animal) is a special privilege. I would have no problem seeing the vast majority of people be denied this opportunity.

I was already aware of project AWARE...but nice thread :D

I try to help people better understand sharks but it isn't easy. It seems that the damage done by the movie Jaws is just to great. Also I think that more time and effort should be put into breeding marine fishes so that people don't have to take them off the reef.
