I have a 12g nano with breeding Red Cherry Shrimp and am having a problem with green hair algae but don't want to use chemicals because of the shrimp.Someone told me that ottos would help, so I got 2 last week and they just eat the regular algae which is good but that is what the shrimp eat plus algae wafers,But neither of them will touch the hair algae and you can sit there and pretty much watch it grow its that fast, I pick through it daily but becoming a hassle because I have 3 other tank that need attention as well.Let me know if you have any suggestion,Pic of tank with out hair algae. Thanks:thumbsup:

barley straw...

pads - 8x8x1 which work well in sumps
pellets - looks like hamster food.. make a cheesecloth pouch for it cuz it makes a heck of a mess
extract - comes in a little bottle

all of them work about the same.. its not instant.. it does not "kill" the algae it keeps it from growing.. so once it dies on its own theres no new growth... takes about a month or so..

it does give the water a bit of a "yellow" tint... its not bad and once you have the algae beat you dont need to keep using the barley straw..

ive used it all of my tanks ate one point or another.. (25g shrimp tank is included in "all")

Will this kill all the algae or just the hair type,I think I'm asking a little to much, because I would like to keep just the regular green algae because my shrimp and ottos love it, But they don't touch the hair type which is a pain,I took one of my cpf out to help reduce the growth but doesn't seem to be working,Would it work if I blacked out the tank for a couple of days,I also use Prime and Excel which I have been told helps with algae growth but again no change in the hair type

honestly i have no idea... the only algae i ever had an issue with is the green hair algae.. i know i still get diatome buildup from time to time and a bit of hardspot algae in the pond tank (but only on a clay pot)..

my gf planted tank has had issues with black beard algae.. she used the pellets but also spot treated with hydrogen peroxide as well as excel.. so i dont know which one did the most..

ive had ZERO luck with blacking out a tank to kill hair algae.. this includes when i put some in a bottle and put it in the closet for 3 weeks...

prime wont do anything for algae control... excel works well for everything ive used it on however it does kill some plants (vallisneria)

dont worry too much about the otto and shrimp.. theres enough biofilm in the tank to give them something to munch on between feedings
