like the title says i have hair algea every where and i dont know what to do?!?! it is only a ten gallon but of there is a fish out there that would like to be in my tank (to eat the hair algea), now i dont know if one exsits but scooping out hair algea is not going to work very well....or if there is somthing that i can use to get rid of it (some sort of anti algea drops) but what i have in the tank is:
heavily planted(fake)-with ine sword
chineese algea eater
sunrise platy
bamboo shrimp - x2
one neon tretra
bumblebee catfish - ^(thats why i only have one tetra)^

i have a 20L on the side if there is a larger fish that could only be in there temboraraly because of the size

please help:nilly::)

Try finding a true flying fox and they should eat. Only problem I see is that they can get to 5" so a 10 gallon may only be temporary. I had a hair algea problem as well what you can do is us the algea gone away killer but before that clean the filter extemely well because that is were the seeds of the algea are being distributed from. Here is a picture of one.

Why can't you bleach all the rock & start over? It's only a 10g. I have a 29g w/the same prob. I had to bleach all ther decor monthly, until I added mollies. They pretty much keep it under control now & it's a BW tank, so they're happy in there. The puffers eat their fry too.

When I lived in NY I had algae every type everywhere because I lived in an old town with old pipes . The city used phosphate to coat the pipes so they wouldnt leach lead.
The more water changes I did the worse it was as I was adding algae food (the fish did fine).
I purchased a tapwater purifier the DI type made by aquarium pharmaceutical and that solved the problem.
Do you know if your tapwater has phosphates ? Any petstore can test it

Howdy,

While it sounds insane, true hair algae is an indicator of excellent water quality. Other algae, however, indicate pollution and other water trouble.

For hair algae,you can
  • use a wooden stick and roll it on it like cotton candyto remove bulk
  • add Amano shrimp (Caridina japoinica)
  • add any species of Garra sp.

If nothing else: Congrats for having stellar water. My 40 gal is also growong hair algae. I will start worrying when the hair algae disappear from my tank...

Um, turn out the lights? It would kill the algae, but would not harm the fake plants. The "ine" sword means you have 1 live sword plant? Take it out, put it in a jar of water and leave it outside while you leave the lights out on the tank. Add Flourish Excel to the water the sword is in to kill the algae on it.

Replace the fake plants with real ones...

I'm on well water (N. Florida aquifer) - the same stuff is bottled for all sorts of water companies down the road a few miles. I have 2 10w flourescent bulbs over my 10 gallon tank ($5 each at wally world) that replace the incandescent ones it came with (too much heat). Lots of java moss and java fern, and no algae.

i have live plants in all of my other tank and just wated to try somthing differant but i will proboly just go with the flying fox

thank you all for your help!

well i just got back from my lfs and picked up 2 flying foxes, they are only like a 1/4 of an inch but they will grow thank you all again!

Your better off to get rid of the Chinese Algae Eater now. they do not eat algae. More or less, fish, and fish food. That and the aggression that's in them.
