ages ago i had a 1 foot fire eel
fat, healthy, active, tame
i fed it shrimp.
i feed my fish generally pink shrimp, which is common practise here.
i feed my arowanas whole shelled shrimp thats flash cooked

and i feed some other meat eaters peeled pink shrimp.

fed the fire eel pink shrimp - into pieces and it loved it! it chased it and ate it before anything got near it
got fat and i changed water frequently cos of my feeding so water params were ok.
then one day, i saw it, offish its ood and twitching, convulsing..... hours later its dead.....
it was convulsing like a person would with epilepsy.. yo know, iits all curved and just twitching, convulsing.
the fish in there were alright, there was a ornate bichir and a red aro..... no problems.

now i got a new tire track eel, as i love these things and would love a huge one
2 canister filters, the size is nly 15 cms. i wanna ensure its over filtered.
eating shrimp, loves it also, chases it now.
then just 5 mins ago
i find it out of its hide hole..... and its all weird.
not interested in food.
and semi twitching too and convulsing

what im i doing wrong

watr params ok
are these fish very sensitive to nitrates?
i dont have a nitrate problem but there wll always be nitrates in the tank. any tank generally speaking cos fish poo all the time.
and water temp is 28 degrees celcius.

help me
i really wnat to rear one of these succesfully, one of my undiscovered countries when it comes to fish

curiouse as to it's tank mates, my fire eel will "spasm" at my needle fish if it gets to close to his hidey hole. It seems to be an aggresive "warning" as mine eats like a horse. could be a sign of stress saying "back off!" maybe more hidey holes? they can stress to death quite easily i've found out. But once settled in for a few monthes most eels you can't keep in the tank! lol. and are you feeding FW or SW shrimp? I also feed my eel earthworms ( you can get at local bait shops almost everywhere) and frozen bloodworms. TT's in my experiance are also fisheaters. if it can fit in it's mouth it's done for. Might try some FW strips of fish, I home breed some guppies and mollies and occasionally toss some into my eel's tank ( the needlenose eats them not my fire eel). as safe a live feeder as you can get IMO.

its weird, i was sure it was gonna die, it was like doing convulsions and like a 'death roll' thing then it hid.
i see it now and its not convulsing anymore.
but its body looks all tense like peanut.
its fat
it eats shrimp
i feed it SW shrimp, cooked from supermarket packets.

i have had a big fire eel die in the same convulsing tyupe of thing

in the tank is a pictus cat, 3 geophagus and a sweetherat parrot.
it hides in this hole, the others dont bother it.

i cant get freshwater shrimp or fish here.
ONLY sw fish and shrimp

could it be the cooked shrimp?

i dont want this to die
i tried to video but couldnt get a good shot or a photo.

the upper half of its body closer tot he head is all peanutty, like musculr biceps. it eats regularly enough.

i will stop feeding it for a couple of days.
i am thinking indigestion with the cooked shrimp?

water parameters are ok it seems, temp is 28 to 29 degrees. do they do that if its too warm?

personally I've never fed sw shrimp to my eels as I've always had earthworms available, and frozen bloodworms, beefheart, ect. I suspect it could be a bad thing. also if you PH registeres over 7.2 they do not like it. I lost one recently to a major PH spike in my tank. the other survived but I learned they are pretty sensitive to their Ph being over 7.2 might be able to push 7.5 Over that and they degrade very quickly. Also bad shippping/mishandleing can do damage you may not see for weeks with these guys. Nitrates don't seem to bother them much but ammonia that are very sensitive too.

not sure what the exact conversion is for 28C but I keep mine between 76-80F for my fire eel and have kept TT's and Spiney's in the same range without issues. Other then those 2 species always liked ot jump out -.-...

Have you treated the tank with any medications? they can be very sensitive to medicines as well.
