I have a 55 gallon that had perfect water until i checked the water and the ammonia was high for some reason, it was 8. I did a %50 water change immediately and put back in conditioned water and now my tank is cloudy. Is my tank going to have to cycle all over again. Is it a mini cycle?

BTW, fish had been breathing heavy since 4 days ago so i thought it was nitrates and did a water change but i didn't seem to help at all. And no, they are not gasping for air at the surface of the water just breathing heavily.

Anyone?

The fish are breathing hard because the ammonia is burning their gills. You need to keep doing water changes until the ammonia levels areunder .25ppm. If your ammonia is at 8ppm then it is likely your tank was never cycled or had a major crash. Usingprime can help detox the ammonia.

More info is needed to correct this.

How long has the tank been setup?
What is current stock and tank size?
Current filtration?
Ph level, nitrite and nitrate levels?

Tank has been set up for a few months(5-6), stock is 2 jds, 2 convicts, 2 plecos, and 2 small red devils. A bit overstocked i know but i will be upgrading soon. All fish are under 6 inches.Ph is 6.5 for some weird reason when it is usually at 7.5. Filtration is a sump filled with bioballs and scrubbies running at 1000 gph and a fluval 304 for mechanical filtration. So how do i do the water changes? keep doing water changes in one day until i get it under 25 ppm? How often?

Woke up today and the tank is alot less cloudy and the ammonia is 2ppm, another water change i guess. Can a tank be cycled and have high ammonia levels? at least temporarily?

Not really. It's not considered fully cycled until the BB can digest all the ammonia produced by the fish as fast as they produce it.

probably a mini cycle, might add some amquel or prime to protect the fish from ammonia burning their gills
