I had just received this severum from a friend who is moving out of state and can't move the fish with him. He was told it was a red severum but I don't think it is according to Google pictures(not even close to a red or super red) ?. I am not familiar with the severum species so I would like you guys to help us identify this mysterious severum. It is currently more or less 4 inches. Thanks guys.

It’s going to be very difficult to tell because Heros over dark substrate and backgrounds tend to lose their colors and show bold stress bars in an attempt to blend in with the surroundings.

The underlying coloration makes me think it could be the mouthbrooding Heros liberifer which has horizontal lines of red dots along the side and belly, which earns them the common name red bellied/red line severum. But the face shape and eye color doesn’t look right. It could just be a young fish that’s too washed out to tell.

Maybe a red shoulder? Could have been sold as red.

This fish does not have rotkeil coloration (no orange/bright red anal or pelvic fins) and has 9 bars, where rotkeil commonly have 8.

Let it settle in and then see if it will relax. I agree not a H. Liberifer as the eye isn't red and no horizontal red dots. Also, at that size should start to show freckles if it were H.L. I'm leaning towards a Turquoise or a Green.
