Help I.D. this Payara

Yep.

There is usually a big difference between the amount of money that an armatus costs compared to that of scombs so if you were told that it was an armatus I hope you didn't pay too much for it.I'm not sure exactly how big scombs can get but they have a reputation for dropping dead before or around the twelve inch size.

The fish in the pic(around 4 inches) cost me USD$82
How much would an armatus cost in comparison?
Dropping dead around 12"?? Sigh, I was already disappointed knowing it's a scomb and now this..

Armies usually go for about a hundred dollars at that size and sometimes more but scombs are much cheaper than that usually,I've paid thirty dollars each for four inch scombs in the past.Location could play a part in pricing.Scombs are also not the fast growers that armatus are either....

That's a tad high for a scomb of that size, but it's not bad. It's quite a bit less than you'd have paid if you got it online with shipping.

Scombs are small and quick maturing for payaras. They're sexually mature adults by six inches and only live for five years or so in the wild (exceptional cases withstanding).

You likely have at least half a decade left with that fish, and he has the ability to live his entire life in a 75. They're not bad fish, just misunderstood. That, combined with shippers bringing in getiatric large adults in stead of healthy young fish, has given them a reputation that they don't deserve.
