First of all I would like to say Hello, I've been looking around these forums for a while (via google searches etc) and I've decided to join! :nilly: So first of all id like to say hello! (: Now to the interesting stuff! Ive seen Motoro Stingrays for the first time in my local aquarium shop and I instantly fell in love, Originally I was told by the guy in the shop that they don't really need that bigger of a tank, he recommended a 6ft x 2ft x 2ft when I asked what sort of size tank they will need, I later went home and started my months of research and found out yes, a 6x2x2 thank probably would do... For about 6-12 months! (must have forgotten to mention that part the nib witted douche bag) But anyways, basically im here to find out for sure what a size tank I should be looking at, Also if you do post an answer in gallons or litre or whatever please not that im from the uk, Im not to sure if our gallon is different to yours ): Don't worry I am not planning on jumping into this in a rush, I am the first to admit I am new to this whole fish scene, But take my word for it I am learning more each and everyday thanks to forums etc (: Looking forward to hearing from you all, Thanks for reading guys!:nilly:

if you get a male one, you will be fine for a 6x2x2,
height isnt all that important, but 2 feet high is fine,

im from the UK too so this tank size is a 180 gal :)

a male motoro will be fine, but a female would get far too large, (usually about 6 inches bigger disk size)

i have 2 in a 6x2.5 wide x 2 high and they are thriving, growing pretty rapid and other than the 2nd one i had being far too thin when i got him, had no issues what so ever and will be getting a female, however im almost ready to move into my new house where i will have the space for a 4-500 gal tank.

where abouts n the uk are you from and which shop were they for sale at?

2.5-3 feet wide is great for rays.

Maybe I was abit quick to jump to conclusion that's 6x2x2 was to small then  to be honest I really glad you have said that, I was starting to panic slighty after hearing that they need like 8x4 tanks minimum!! Im from kettering in Northamptonshire, Actually quite a funny story.. I went to "Kettering Aquatics" today to pick up some more fish for my Tropical tank.. A young woman walked in and was looking at the two stingrays that are in there and said to the guy she was in the shop with "Oh did I tell you steve's stingray died again?". Couldn't have happened at a worse time really considering i am getting one \: Haha! Also any info you have on stingrays that you could share with me id appreciate it very much! Like what sort of filters i should be aiming at getting.. well anything really (: hope to hear back from you man and thanks for letting me know about the tank size :nilly:

glad you joined and and are asking lots of questions before rushing and buying and then asking questions. what you are doing now will ensure that you have the best for your rays from pups to adults. please wait for more comments and do more research before listening to any one of us though as we all have our own opinions and experiences.

like for instance i dont believe a 6x2x2 would do and some will agree and others will disagree. i say get the biggest you can fit cause chances are you will want more than just one. also so you wont have to go through the trouble of upgrading tanks and can have one from pup to adult. also do you know how to tell the difference between a male and female or are you going to ask the ill advising employee to help with that. this is another thing you will want to research. also there are more types of rays out there other than moto's and they have different sizes and some you might like more and maybe suit your space needs better. for filtration im a huge sump fan but there are more ways to filter a tank than one and are just as effective, but i like the added water volume and media space a sump adds.

we dont want your friend to be that girl so keep researching and asking questions. look at the media lounge to see more types of rays as well and also ask around as you might have a breeder or seller close to you as well and can give you more help and advise than the employee you talked to did.

I think a 24" wide tank is too narrow. In my opinion 30" wide is minimum for a 16" male ray and they will get this big in less that 2 years so be ready.

Smaller rays like Retics are ok in 24 wide but not a Motoro. Bigger the better. Ive got 6'x3'x29" for 2 henlei rays and i still feel like going bigger. As for filtration i like the sump with k1 moving bed and thrickle towers with bio balls. Mechanical as first stage very important and keep on top of the maintenance. Rays are a lot of work and are expensive. But theyre worth it. Welcome to MFK its great here

it is bare, bare minimum, but with the right ray you can get away with it, a hystrix or a male motoro would be ok as long as it wasnt sharing floor space with another fish (or decor from front to back) but you would need immaculate water.

im with jeffers on the sump filtration. sooo many options, even to have a part as a 'recovery area' potential for loads of media, which you'll need lots of, eg i have 75 KG of lava rock, and 360 bio balls, then to clean the water, 3 large filter socks, then 8 pond filter sponges, plus a 36wt uv sterilizer and this all turns over a tad over 5.5 times per hour . sounds silly really but at least i know im ready when they get bigger. sumps do tend to be the cheaper option too.

feeding is the big one though, i have 2 9ish inch motoros and they have 2 packs of muscles, 1 pack of prawns, 2 fillets of tilapia a week in addition to hikaria sinking pellets which a £10 bag lasts a month, the fresh/frozed foods cost about £6 a week from morrisons, and they arent full size, dont let this put you off though, because its all so so worth it!

Im gonna go for a 6x2x2 with a sump filter, And I think im gonna stick to the motoro stingray (atleast for my first ray) 1, because I like them (: They are beautiful, Peaceful and majestic fish! and 2, Everyone ive spoken to says they are the most hardy ray, and as it is my first time I want a shall I say "beginner" ray, Its will still probably be a few months from now until I get "Mildred" the motoro ray (may have to come up with a new name as il defo be looking for a male now) I have looked up on how to tell the difference between males and females, But until now I wasn't really aware of how much of a size difference there was between males and females, Before talking to you guys I was just going to get whatever one was available and that I liked (.: So you guys have probably saves me 109 pounds and a lot of disappointment! Would you guys recommend any kinda of sump? ive heard you can make your own using another fish tank? Would you recommend that option or would you recommend a branded sump? Again huge thanks for all the advise guys (:
