Hi folks, I'm breeding Cherax quadricarinatus Australian yabbies, my first batch.. I seem to be having quite a few deaths.. is that normal? I've taken them out of the main tank and they are in shallow 10" x 12" x 24" containers, waters changed 50% at least every other day.. doesnt seem to be any fighting going on. I did however start to feed them a bit of flaked prawns, another thread here mentioned something about a virus in prawns, apart from that i feed them bits of chicken flakes and cucumber which they seem to love. Any ideas anybody? Its my first brood so I'm not gonna be to hard on myself even if they all die, but i'd like to know if it's something I'm doing so I don't do it again next time.

I used to have cherax in a pond .
what worked for me is flooting plants with large root systems.
first of all they seem to eat part of the young roots even though they are carnivores. and second of all they hide from other babies.
problem is you wont see many of them. but survive better this way.

thanks my friend, mine also nibble at plants if in the tank, they like eating cucumber, but like meat of all kinds the most. I've just put lots of 1" long hosepipe offcuts in the tanks so they have they're own "burrows" so I'll see how that goes, nice to hear from you.:grinno:
