my 125 has 2 u shaped cracks on the bottom glass. I was hoping to fix it to use for a riparium tank but I have been told that it is dumb to do and that it will never be a trustworthy tank.

My idea was to fix using the glass sandwich idea. Some say it works. Others say no way.

I understand that it is not an expensive tank but it is what I have and I am super, dooper, broke. There is no money, just this old tank.

Ideas, thought, or suggestions?

Thanks!

If you silicone solid plates of glass on the inside and the outside, and the plates are a lot bigger than the cracks, it should be fine. Got a pic so we can see where the cracks run off to?

I will see if I can take some photos tomorrow. The cracks run off to the side of the tank and are pretty good sized. If I can get it to hold about 40 or 60 gallons of water that would be wonderful as I can do the riparium thing with it. I would prefer to have it full of something big and fishy but beggars cannot be choosers!

Cut the silicone out of the inside and put a piece of 1/4" glass in the bottom, the size of the entire bottom. Reseal it and it should be fine for what you want to do.

Whether right or wrong, everyone has an opinion and they will tell it to you as if it were fact. And on the internet, anyone can be an expert.

So far, you have been given good advise in this thread. It shouldn't take too much intuition to see that if you silicone another piece of glass of the same thickness on top of the cracked piece that the tank will be stronger than before. The new piece will offer the same strength as the old piece, and the old piece will add to that strength.
