Help i think my oscar has hole in the head disease

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
First you need to be sure that your Oscar is suffering from the disease. Do you have any pictures that you can post? There are a few things that you can do to prevent HITH; perform weekly water changes, stay away from feeders, and feed quality pellets. What size is your tank and what are the size and numbers of the fish sharing the tank? A little more info will help others to give you proper advice.

i tried to take pictures with my phone and you cant see anything except a blurry fish. he as pitting between his eyes behind is right eye and looks like a couple small ones on his head and it looks like some down his side he is with a JD the JD is around 7 inches and the oscar is probably 5 inches they are in a 30 gal tank for right now.

Do you have a test kit? Give us your water perameters, maintenance schedule. Os are suseptable to HITH and require very clean water a vitamin rich diet and nitrates below 10ppm. 50% weekly water changes, gravel vacuming, filter maintenance and removal of all uneaten food. Keeping the tank clean is 90% of the battle.

Just saw 30 gals too small for your fish also.

I'm going to state the obvious and move on, you need a bigger tank. Ok, how often are you performing water changes and how much water are you replacing every time? I guess all you can do now to help your Oscar is to medicate it for the disease. I have seen HITH stop progressing with regular water changes of 50% and a good diet. The pits will heal but some of the deeper ones will still be a bit visible. If you choose to medicate, you may want to isolate the Oscar in another tank during the process if you have a spare tank available.

In addition to what the others said, you can try melafix for a medication. It's usually quite easy to find. Just take care with the dosage.

yea i know the tank is too small that is why it says in a 30 gallon tank FOR NOW. i dont have a test kit i will go get one and test the water. thank you for all the help i will start doing more frequent water changes.

As said before you need a much larger tank for the oscar and JD. On medication that works for healing up hole in the head is Metro + it works best as a dip. Add a capful to a 5 gal bucket and let the oscar sit in there for an hour a day.
