I came home from work today and dropped in some beef heart into my tank with my gold saum and senegal in it. I went around, fed the other tanks and came back and saw my sen thrashing about. First I thought he was choking, hes gasping and thrashing around, then he stops. First thing I notice is that only half of his dorsal fins are up and he doesn't seem to be using his rear fins or tail to propel himself. Did he somehow become paralyzed? I moved him out of the 55 into an occupied hospital tank to better keep an eye on him. I don't see any damage visible except for a small spot on his slime coat that the pleco may have done (fixing to be rid of said pleco). Any suggestions? He was my first and my favorite, I hate to think of losing him.

keep an eye on him was it eating my senegal gets pretty into it when he bites off more then he can chew but if it still does it , it could be a parasite

He's acting like hes paralyzed from about the third dorsal finlet back. Something's definitely up.

u got bigger tankmates with it?

my bichirs quite a few had this paralysis or bent spine before. it will heal in months to come but serious cases like a 90deg bend will never. i suspect was either due to the food or banging around from other bichirs or hard objects :)

Actually it's the biggest in there. It's got probably a good 1-1.5 inches on the gold saum. He was back behind some wood when he started thrashing. He doesn't have any severe bend to his body, just a slight curve. I hope it heals itself, any suggestions? Right now I have him back in my 55, pulled the pleco out and should have my 100 up by the end of the week.

Anyone else have experience with this?

is the bend like front to back or to one side?

It's a slight hunched back look. Not bad. He still eats ok, just doesn't seem to have complete use of his back half. Haven't seen him thrash any today either.

Thinking it might have injured its back somehow theres not much you can do but wait it out.Eating is good but is it eliminating(fancy word for pooping)

Haven't had the opportunity to witness it yet but he was up and floating near the surface earlier. I'm hoping all is well, I may just have to get him a handicap sticker...
