I was given two indo dats about 2.5 inches each. What do I feed? Will they go after tankmates? I have a 65g growout tank with 4 baby cats (~5inches) and an alligator gar are they compatible? any advise would help. I'll keep reading

What kind of catfish ? How big is the gar ?

In the long run, no. Gator gars can exceed 6 feet in length and will eat your other fish, unless those cats happen to be redtails.

It's a bad idea to put those dats in with a gar and catfish. If there isn't a problem now, there will be down the line because your gar and catfish will grow ALOT faster than your dats. Ask anyone here about average dat growth rates and they'll tell you that dats grow much slower than other monster fish. You should buy (at least) a 20g tank for your small dats or just sell them.

Thanks for the input. the alligator gar is about 8" but the cats are rtc, tsn, and hybrids. they are not sizing them up yet, but I didn't know about the slow growth rate. I have a spare 10g tank that I can put them in until I can get them a bigger palace.

coming from a gar guy- this is a ridiculously bad combo. i'm not being an a-hole, because you will end up with dead fish in the next month. the gar will grow @ 2+inches per month. the indo will probably average somewhere at 0.5" per month. you will have an 18"-2' gar by the years end, and a 6" dat...you also know that the gar will get 3' in the next year, 5' fish eventually. are u sure it's a gator gar?

 I'm trying to figure out if the RTC would eat the gar before it grows that massive or its the other way around...

How big is their next tank, unless it's in the multi-thousand gallon range, your gar may be to aggressive even for your catfish.

after the 65g the next one is a 250 and I am getting the big tank over the summer 1200 - 1500 gallons, I hope the big rtc doesn't eat the alligator gar (which it is) or my arowana or the oscars or everyone
