hey, im new here but not to cichlids. ive kept quite a few before, mostly africans and a few south americans. a few months ago i redid my 75 gallon and planted it.

the newest fish added is an archer but im not sure which type. the lfs said that this one would only get about 6 or 7 inches long but i figured id double check with you guys. here it is

thanx. so i was hoping it was a pygmy but i probably wouldve paid more than $20 for it. the tank is planted. in there along with archer:

1 juvie wild x discus 3.5''
1 6.5'' featherfin knife
2 temorary 4-6" fancy goldfish
some cories
1 arabesque pleco
1 raphael cat
2 4" giant danios
1 black skirt tetra who thinks its an archer and follows him around
some neons and fancy guppies as food for archer
some ottos and sae's
the archer is a little bigger than 4" right now

will i need to upgrade in a few months, a year for the archer? the 7 spot archers get a little under a foot, right? i want to get some more discus eventually when i upgrade and keep them and the featherfin with the archer.

currently feeding crickets, beefheart mixture, cichlid pellets, bloodworms, tubifex, and color flakes, anything else i should consider?

i have an emporer 400 and am picking up an xp3 this weekend and do four 25% w/c a week

any other fish i should remove, add, etc? the goldfish will come out in a week and ottos will be moved to a planted twenty gallon

Welcome to MFK ! DCfreak2K5, That skirt tetra is funny! :lol2: I thought archers are slightly brackish? But don't start addiing salt. I think they might be bad for plants. I think it depends on how the archer fish was kept at the local fish store. I like those big plants in the background, looks like Amazon swords...

thanks. he was in freshwater at the store in a 220 with some sweet aros(if i only had room). yeah, i get a kick outta the black skirt thing. its hilarious, he'll even chase guppies around with the archer.
here some pics of the discus. he was all brown when i got him a month ago. hes starting to color up around the egdes and on the fins. hes about 3 1/2 inches. thatll give you an idea of the how big the sword he likes to hide in is:

That black moor on the lower left corner is camouflage! Nice pictures, thanks for sharing. I like the aquascaping. Nice substrate too, what kind is it?

This one is the T. jaculatrix, the common or banded archer, it is a bit smaller (12" max instead of 16") than the seven spot (T. chataeus). The way to tell is that the seven spot has rounded dark markings that seldom reach down it's body past the midline, the banded is the one that the dark marking just in front of the anal fin can reach almost all the way down to the vent. I think it is the only one that has that and even with them it doesn't always reach that far, this one does. Here is a pic of a good example of the banded.
